SHS Tandem Dump Trailer

About

We are Juniors at Stratford High School in Houston, Texas and are enrolled in the Academy of Science and Engineering program. This program involves thoughtful scientific projects that focuses on students who are interested in pursuing STEM careers in the future. We have been challenged to make a senior project and have decided to base our project in an agricultural field. We hope to expand on our knowledge of mechanics and expand our knowledge into the field of agricultural engineering.

A reoccurring problem that is faced by many farmers and ranchers is the need to fix roads and move the loose materials that fix the roads. Moving loose material is very difficult and time consuming challenge that takes a lot of man power to complete. Many solutions to the problem have been created like dump trucks and wheel barrows. But we have decided to create something that is economically feasible, easy to use, and gets the job done effectively.

Our goal is to create what is known as a dump trailer. What a dump trailer is, is a squared container on a trailer that can be raised to use gravity to push out materials within its capacity. For this project, our main focus will be on the ease of use, an affordable price, and more importantly the quality of the product. Many company's make some form of a dump trailer, but many are overpriced and are not made for a lifetime of use. We will travel to active farmers and ranchers and interview them for there input on the project and what they would want to see. We will research the best materials and there sizes to provide a strong, quality product that will also be affordable. Our goal is to create a product that can be relied on and can be used to get the job done effectively.
