This week, we cut all of the materials that are needed for the frame of the trailer and the dump bed frame into specific sizes so that we can create a building block of the trailer that everything is going to fit on. We contacted our mentor and asked him for guidance on what to start on and he suggested cutting the frame material so the next time we can put together the frame.
We went to our mentor Jim Blackburn's shop in Magnolia and used a high grade steel cutter to cut the metal at specific lengths. After Jim showed us how to use the machinery, he left us to do our work so we learned how to get in a rhythm and be productive. This allowed us to finish all the cutting we had to do for the following weeks, as well as some more cutting that we were eager to get ahead on.
What we did well this week was communicating with our mentor and finally getting some ground work done on the project. We planned when, where, what, and how we were going to do while at Jim's place before even leaving to go there. We scheduled around school and worked with each other so that we both were able to go. We feel very successful in what we accomplished this week and feel like we are heading in the right direction.
We still have a lot of material to buy like tires, axles, paint, and the hydraulic system, but we have the ball rolling and are going to keep it that way. We still need to weld everything together and get the materials but all of that will come with ti
me.
What we could have done better this week was being more productive. We could have looked forward into our plans and started being more productive while we were there. We can only go to our mentor's shop on the weekends and that limits the time we get to spend there. So, we could have looked forward and tried to cut all the materials we had purchased so that we were farther ahead when the time came and could inevitably finish the project a little bit sooner. Even though we failed to do this we still had a very productive week and can not wait for our next step in the project.
