Finishing the Dump Bed Frame

What we were able to accomplish this week was finishing the cross bracing on the dump bed frame. We cut out 3” C channel and welded it horizontally to provide structural support. We then attached 4 pieces to sit perpendicular to the cross bracing of the frame to provide another dimension of strength between the supports. After that we were able to cut out angle iron and weld steel plate alongside one end of the of the metal piece to provide a connecting point for the hydraulic piston to attach to the dump bed frame. We measured and centered the hydraulic support and welded it into place making sure it was in the right position.

Once we were done with that we started working on the safety bar stops which allow you to raise the dump bed into place and lock it into place. This allows for work to be done under the bed without the risk of the bed frame falling on top of someone under it. It provides a safety feature for the dump trailer. To accomplish this we cut out 5” C channel to a certain length and cut out a piece of steel plate to fit inside the C channel and act as stops to lock into. We then welded it onto the frame and positioned it correctly so that it could function as a safety bar stop.

In the following weeks we plan to cut the materials for the vertical supports of the dump bed frame, cut out and attach the thin gauge metal to act as the bed of the trailer, attach a hinge for the dump bed, buy and install a hydraulic piston, put in the electrical components, and paint the trailer. We finished a lot this week, but we still have a far way to go. But if we stick to the plan we have and don’t run into many complications we will have ample time to complete the project on time.

What we did well this week was getting as much done as we hoped. We finished all of the cross bracing and hydraulic supports allowing us to move farther into the project. We stayed on task and completed a lot of what we have left to do. Not only did we get a lot done, but we worked very efficiently and is why we were able to get so much done. We have a lot more to do, but with the work ethic that we worked with this week we will be able to complete the project on time.

What we need to work on in the following weeks is sticking strictly to our schedule. In the last week we completed certain steps that we were not planning to do till later. But instead of getting done what we were planning to do we bounced around our to do list and did what we wanted. If we want to complete this project on time we need to work more strictly to our schedule and stay ahead of the game. When we stick to a plan we work better than going into the project blindly. So we need to work on this if we want to be successful.
