Trailer Hitch

This week what we accomplished was taking our parts to the shop we worked on, attached cross bracing on the tongue of the trailer, completed the tongue of the trailer, and attached the hitch to the tongue. We loaded one of our trucks up with the material that we purchased the following week and unloaded it at the shop we work in. To finish the tongue we welded the sides of the tongue to the frame and added welds to where the tongue attaches to the frame to provide more structural support. Finally, we finished with attaching the hitch to the trailer. We first cut out sheet metal to weld onto the frame to provide a smooth surface for the hitch to attach onto. Next we leveled the hitch onto the sheet metal and centered it onto the piece. We clamped it in place, double checked our positioning, and welded the hitch onto the trailer along all sides. After that, we finished our work day with thinking ahead. We thought it would save us time to attach the chains onto the trailer to connect to a vehicle. So we took chains and attachment hooks for the chains and welded the pieces onto the trailer.

What we are planning to do next is attach the axles, suspension, and the jack to the trailer. In the following week we plan to pick up the axles we ordered so we can attach them to the trailer. Once we have them we will be able to put them on in the next week or two depending on when the axles come in. If we cannot obtain the axles we plan to work on the attachment point of the hydraulic kit of the trailer. Either way, we plan to work on something in the next week that will greatly improve our trailer. Once we attach the axles, suspension, tires, and jack stand we will be able to start on the next frame of the trailer and start working on the dump bed. We still have to make the dump bed frame, the side panels, and install the hydraulic piston. We have a long way to go, but as soon as the bottom part of the trailer is complete the project should speed up in the process.

What we did well this week was working efficiently. Due to schedule limitations, we did not have as much time as we would have liked to work on the project. But we were still able to work meticulously and complete the tongue and hitch on the trailer. We were planning to accomplish more, but with the time we had we worked efficiently to complete as much as we could on the trailer. Also we looked for the future and ordered our axles. We made the most efficient choice to order parts early so we can complete our project in the most timely manner.

What we need to work on is finding more time. We did not have a good enough schedule to take advantage of the time we had in our Thanksgiving break when we should have exploited the chance to get as much done as possible. With the Christmas Break fast approaching we need to find as much time to work on the project so we can finish the project in time. We need to work at finding more time or we are going to fall short of completing our goal.
